Residents in Bronzeville pair daily walks along wide residential boulevards with the reality of relying on neighborhood transit lines rather than downtown convenience.
Architect Joseph Thain designed the Romanesque Revival structure using ashlar granite along Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. The exterior features a prominent corner turret, round-arch window openings, and an entrance deeply set behind a segmented stone arch. The interior historically held ground-floor gathering rooms and an upper ballroom, though the property was later converted into private residential apartments.
The building served as the South Side home of writer Ida B. Wells and attorney Ferdinand Lee Barnett during their civil rights campaigns. Wells investigated and reported on lynching violence across the American South and helped establish the NAACP. This Bronzeville address remains the best preserved of their Chicago residences, earning designations as a Chicago Landmark and a National Historic Landmark.
