About the place

Skidmore, Owings and Merrill designed the landmark skyscraper in the Magnificent Mile district.

Architect Bruce Graham and structural engineer Fazlur Rahman Khan created the tower for Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. Early work ground to a halt when unexpected soil settlement during concrete pouring triggered financial collapse for the original developer. John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance assumed control, retained the original designers, and completed the skyscraper as the tallest high-rise in the city.

Chief building engineer Ray Heckla moved his family inside before completion, establishing a precedent for vertical living high above Michigan Avenue. Daily life blends residential quarters with professional offices, broadcast transmitters, and an observation deck. The property eventually split among multiple corporate owners, while the loss of naming rights led management to strip the original commercial moniker.

Athletes climb the interior stairs each winter during an organized benefit race for respiratory health that terminates at the observation deck. Long-term occupants share the tower with television broadcast infrastructure and major public venues, though upper-floor dining spaces have closed under commercial pressure. The high-rise also entered popular cinema after serving as the primary filming backdrop for a Poltergeist film sequel.
