About the place

Architect William Le Baron Jenney transformed city skylines on this corner by introducing skeleton construction.

The structure pioneered modern high-rise engineering by relying on an internal and external fireproof metal frame alongside reinforced concrete. This revolutionary load-bearing skeleton allowed the edifice to weigh substantially less than traditional masonry equivalents. Municipal officials grew so alarmed by the unfamiliar lightweight assembly that they temporarily halted work to investigate whether the framework could safely stand.

Commercial pressure eventually doomed the landmark despite robust office occupancy across the surrounding financial district. Developers cleared the parcel alongside multiple adjacent properties to erect the sprawling Field Building across the entire commercial block. Today, visitors seeking the origin of skyscraper engineering find a commemorative lobby plaque marking where the historic skeleton once stood.
