About the place

State Street preserves its grand cinema palace as an active stage house.

The venue began as the flagship picture palace for the Balaban and Katz theater chain, designed by architects Cornelius Rapp and George Rapp in a French revival style. That architecture survives as the oldest remaining example of the style in the city. Early crowds arrived for silent cinema accompanied by a massive Wurlitzer pipe organ, full orchestra, and an early mechanical air cooling system that set industry standards.

Auditorium walls display large proscenium canvas murals by painter Louis Grell, depicting classical deities added during a municipal exposition renovation. While stage entertainment stopped during midcentury operational shifts, the hall later revived its performance schedule with touring musicians, stand-up comedy, and civic gatherings under Madison Square Garden management, anchoring the surrounding downtown theater corridor.
