About the place

Dubai operates as a high-density desert trade hub where foreign residents form the overwhelming majority of the working population.

Commercial growth defines the emirate, which expanded along a natural saltwater inlet from a small pearling community into an international freight and financial centre. Petroleum extraction accounts for only a minor share of public revenue. Instead, wholesale trade, construction, corporate free zones, and maritime logistics sustain the economy, drawing a multinational workforce that outnumbers the native population.

Daily transit follows linear highway corridors alongside an automated metro network. The climate alters everyday movement drastically between seasons: high summer temperatures make outdoor walking unfeasible, forcing residents into air-conditioned stations, feeder buses, and taxis. Newcomers quickly learn that accommodation costs dictate the monthly budget, making flatshares in older quarters the standard entry path.

Strict regulatory frameworks govern public conduct and social life. Islamic legal codes prohibit public intoxication, and licensed service of alcohol remains largely restricted to hotel venues. Residents observe regulations covering attire in traditional districts and modest conduct in shared spaces. The municipal work week accommodates Friday congregational prayers, while severe legal penalties enforce road conduct and public order.

Associations
  • Gold souksPhysical bullion trade centres on traditional markets in Deira.
  • Sheikh Zayed RoadThe primary highway corridor carries intense traffic between districts.
  • Summer climateExtreme temperatures force daily commutes entirely indoors or into taxis.
  • Alcohol regulationsDrinks require venue licensing and remain mostly limited to hotel bars.
  • Dubai CreekThe historic marine channel divides central Deira from Bur Dubai.
Facts
  • Expatriate residents comprise the overwhelming majority of the municipal population.
  • The automated metro system operates Red and Green lines linking coastal and commercial districts.
  • Purchasing alcoholic beverages for private residential use requires a personal permit.
  • Revenues from petroleum and natural gas make up a minor portion of the emirate economy.

How does the public transit fare system operate?

Travelers pay for trips across trains, trams, and buses using rechargeable electronic transit cards. Fares depend on the number of zones crossed between tapping in and tapping out. Switching between the rail network and connecting buses is counted as a single journey when completed within a brief transfer window.

What rules govern dress codes and public behavior?
