About the place

Commercial wealth and rapid urbanization define daily routines across the peninsula.

The country occupies a low-lying desert peninsula bordered by Saudi Arabia and the Persian Gulf, with Doha housing the vast majority of residents. Natural gas extraction and petroleum transformed an economy formerly centered on pearling and fishing into one of the highest per-capita incomes globally. Foreign workers constitute nearly the entire active workforce, sustaining massive infrastructure and commercial sectors.

Expatriates face strict civic regulations, including prohibitions on public dining during Ramadan daylight hours and legal bans on recording without consent. Why this specific program?

I have been a volunteer for over a year now, but I have always wanted to gain such experience abroad. My choice fell on South Africa. Quite unusual, isn't it? But there were reasons for that. Our university has many international students, including those from Africa. I have been their mentor for 2 years, I enjoy working with them and helping them adapt, which is why I became interested in Africa specifically. Besides, Russian citizens do not need a visa to go there, and the costs are much lower compared to Europe. It is also a great way to practice English and gain teaching experience! The journey is very long; unfortunately, there are no direct flights from Moscow to Cape Town, so I had to fly via Qatar.
