South Carolina. Myrtle Beach. I'm here.

I arrived in Myrtle Beach, a city where it is almost always summer. Palm trees, the ocean, and endless happiness. A taxi took me to the motel where I was going to live. I settled into my room, unpacked my big bags, stepped out onto the balcony, and sighed with relief: "I'm here." Everything I expected from this place was the ocean and the hot sun. My expectations in this regard were met. Myrtle Beach was especially beautiful in the evening. The city's main attractions are the amusement parks. I didn't think about the stereotypes that exist among most people regarding life in America. I wanted to form my own opinion on the matter. Day after day, I observed different sides of this other life. Of course, it's worth starting with the most striking thing. That is the eternally cheerful and smiling people. There is an opinion among us that "Americans' smiles are fake." I cannot agree with that. Every day on my way to work or just leaving the house, I met at least 10 people who just smiled at me and wished me a good day. And I replied in kind. This is exactly what helped me in all my affairs. After all, from the very beginning of the day, I knew for sure that the day was bound to be good. Americans, for the most part, are friendly, open, and very calm people. Their smile is their attitude toward life. That is, not everything can always be perfect, but the main thing is how you relate to it and perceive it. Despite the fact that I am from Russia, throughout the summer I was treated with respect and helped with everything. You can often hear compliments addressed to you. And these are not just polite phrases, but a sincere attitude. It is necessary to mention food in America. We are used to thinking that all American food is just fast food, and the products are synthetic and tasteless. It is true that restaurant chains like McDonald's are everywhere. But that does not mean that you cannot find normal food. In fact, American cuisine itself is diverse and very tasty. America can offer a wide variety of dishes from different nationalities. Once I was even treated to borscht, which I was extremely surprised by. At the same time, there is also traditional "American" cuisine, which has its own characteristics from state to state. Specifically in Myrtle Beach, there was a restaurant chain called Calabash Seafood. And there were not only fresh seafood, but also a variety of tasty food we are used to. You can also go to the supermarket and cook perfectly normal food at home. So American cuisine is more than just fast food. How do Americans get around? They say they don't walk at all. Of course, knowing how to drive and having your own car is a necessity in America. People are not ready to walk further than a block. But this is not because all Americans are lazy. Especially when public transport is very problematic in cities. People cannot imagine how one can walk long distances at all. At first, I walked to work - there and back. In total, it took an hour. When my bosses found out about this, they were shocked and were surprised for a long time at my endurance. And then, they told me that absolutely every one of them was ready to give me a ride and that it was no trouble for them at all. Attitude towards people with disabilities. Before, I didn't think about people with disabilities and the attitude towards them. For Americans, this is especially important. When I got on the bus more than once, one could observe how they help a person in a wheelchair take a seat among the passengers. Everyone waits patiently and is in no hurry until such a person is inside the bus. As for transport, each one has a special ramp for people with disabilities. I have never encountered this in my city.

New-York, New York

The next morning we had to get up in practically an emergency mode)) ...hostel checkout...and there's Central Park...Americans RUN IN THE MORNING!!!! HAVE YOU EVER SEEN PEOPLE IN RUSSIA WHO WOULD BOTHER TO GET UP AT 6:00 AM JUST TO GO FOR A RUN??? We were with some girls who had come to America in 2007 for the second time... They helped us navigate the subway, we rode with them to Greyhound and... Bought those ill-fated tickets to Alabama, the city of Daphne... During that first trip of mine to America, I didn't yet suspect that Greyhound makes a million stops along the way, that Alabama is a village in the middle of nowhere, and that flying is 1000 times more comfortable... I (Yulia), my friend (Ksyukha), and a girl from our city (Anya) traveled to Alabama for almost a day and a half... On the way, we met a guy from Russia who was heading to Texas... the bus was buzzing))))).... Later, we felt so sorry for that guy, because in our day and a half of travel we cursed everyone and everything, and Texas is even further than Alabama, friends!!! Daphne greeted us with heat, high humidity, and rain... The town is located on the Gulf of Mexico coast... small and unremarkable... That was when I finally saw the real America... Quiet... Single-story... The memory of those houses still remains... Huge... Old... Beautiful... Built in some unclear style, looking like the White House but in miniature... Magnolias... Our employer didn't meet us (even though we definitely called him an hour before arrival) BUT! The workday at McDonald's was over and everyone had gone home... 3 Russian girls were completely unwanted by anyone... We took a taxi and a guy (can I write it like this??? 'African American' is such a long word) took us to the hotel... I must say that we paid a crazy amount of money for that taxi (as we found out later)... I think it was a Holiday Inn... Huge beds and a normal shower—that was all we students needed, not having seen normal living conditions since the moment the plane took off in Russia... The girls at the reception were stunned when they found out we were from Russia... It was like a zoo—they were examining us so carefully...

Birmingham, Alabama

Birmingham, Alabama Maricela. I met Maricela when I was assigned to learn housekeeping from her. At the time, Natasha and I thought this would be our job for a month, but it turned out we only worked for two days. However, in those two days, Maricela taught me a lot: how to properly make beds, clean the bathroom, fold towels, dust, and vacuum the rooms. The hardest part is making the bed look nice, but together we did a great job. And quickly too. Maricela is Mexican. She is short, a bit chubby, with long black hair tied in a ponytail with several colorful hair ties. Maricela has been working at the hotel for about a year; her mother, Estella, is the head housekeeper at the hotel, and she was the one who assigned me to her. Maricela handles the cleaning very quickly; I couldn't keep up with her. But I tried very hard—I was interested in how everything functions. On the first day, Maricela and I cleaned 14 rooms, and on the second, 11. About half an hour per room. Work starts at 8:45. At 12:00, there is a half-hour lunch break. Room cleaning ends around 3 o'clock. But the work doesn't end there; you still need to vacuum the hallways, and often you have to help in the laundry room. Maricela doesn't speak English. She understands a little bit. When Maricela showed or explained something to me, I would say out loud what I thought she meant, and she would nod and say "Si!" if I understood correctly. Maricela is 21, the same age as me. That's why we worked together so happily and harmoniously. She would tell me the names of different objects in Spanish, and I would tell her in English. I am very grateful to Maricela for asking her husband, Ivan, to drive Natasha and me to the nearest Greyhound station in Birmingham. Ivan is Mexican. He understands English better than Maricela and can speak it a little bit. Maricela and Ivan have been married for six years. They got married in Mexico when Ivan was 16 and Maricela was 15. Their son, Christian, is four years old. They live in Bessemer, a suburb of Birmingham. Maricela works at the hotel, and Ivan works in construction. They rent a trailer for $400 a month. In a couple of years, they plan to return to Mexico to continue living and working there. Maricela doesn't like the USA; she likes Mexico. And Ivan says about the USA: "Too much money here."
