About the place

Erawan Shrine brings traditional devotional practice directly into the commercial center of the city.

The shrine houses an image of Phra Phrom, the Thai representation of the Hindu creator deity Brahma. State developers erected the open-air pavilion during construction of the original Erawan Hotel following persistent accidents, labor injuries, and lost shipments of Italian marble. An astrologer recommended the installation to counter negative influences linked to criminals once displayed at Ratchaprasong.

The Fine Arts Department produced the deity statue under the same state auspices as the figure atop the Thai Khu Fa Building at Government House. Following destruction by an intruder, artisans restored the altar with a replacement cast containing gold, bronze, and recovered fragments of the original work. A secondary metal duplicate remains stored for security within the National Museum of Thailand.
