About the place

Centuries of royal construction left behind a fortified palace where Islamic arcades meet Christian halls.

The compound originated as an early Islamic citadel before expanding into a sprawling royal seat under the Abbadids and Almohads. Rulers cleared older quarters to raise interconnected palaces, extensive gardens, and fortified enclosures. Following the Castilian conquest, monarchs retained the core footprint while layering Gothic halls and Mudéjar courtyards directly over the Islamic foundations.

Surviving spaces illustrate this layered heritage, from the stucco work of the Palacio del Yeso to the rib-vaulted underground chambers of the Baños de María de Padilla. The complex remains an official residence for the Spanish royal family, functioning as a working state property rather than a static relic. Modern cinema productions, including international feature films and television dramas, routinely use the halls as backdrops.
