About the place

Hospital de los Venerables stands in Barrio de Santa Cruz as a preserved baroque sanctuary. The complex served retired priests for generations and now houses the Velázquez Center.

Canon Justino de Neve founded the complex under the sponsorship of the Brotherhood of Silence to shelter elderly, impoverished, and disabled priests. Architect Juan Domínguez began construction, and Leonardo de Figueroa completed the baroque edifice and its church dedicated to San Fernando. Set in Plaza de los Venerables within Barrio de Santa Cruz, the compound sits steps from Murillo Gardens, Seville Cathedral, and the Alcázar.

Royal patronage and charity originally funded operations until resources lapsed. Authorities briefly transformed the site into a textile factory, transferring resident clerics to Charity Hospital. A subsequent Royal Order returned the property to the brotherhood, restoring its residential clergy. Today the halls house the Velázquez Center, exhibiting masterworks honoring Diego Velázquez in the center of the old quarter.
