About the place

The fortress anchored imperial administration before fire leveled its halls.

Umayyad rulers founded the citadel above the river bluffs to shield Toledo against northern Christian armies. The fortified enclosure formed the core of Mayrit, grouping the governor quarters, military garrisons, and a central mosque within protective ramparts. Christian monarchs expanded the stronghold following the conquest of the settlement, adding fortified stone enclosures to accommodate the migrating royal court.

Castilian royalty turned the defensive compound into a permanent palace, introducing decorative chambers and ceremonial chapels while preserving the rounded medieval towers along the western slopes. Successive wars and local rebellions scarred the masonry before the royal court chose the city as imperial seat. An accidental fire destroyed the complex, leaving the current royal palace to rise above its historic foundations.
