About the place

The Fountain of Cybele stands in Plaza de Cibeles as a civic rallying point.

Ventura Rodríguez designed this neoclassical monument in the centre of Plaza de Cibeles. Carved from Montesclaros white marble, the central sculpture features the Phrygian earth deity Cybele wearing a mural crown aboard a chariot. Sculptor Francisco Gutiérrez crafted the goddess, while Roberto Michel shaped the pulling lions representing Atalanta and Hippomenes. The landmark anchors the junction of primary boulevards.

Beyond architectural heritage, the plaza functions as the gathering point for major football celebrations. Supporters of Real Madrid and the national team assemble around the basin following championship victories. Mass revelry has damaged the carving on occasion, resulting in broken hands detached from the goddess. Long-term residents plan around these events, which halt central road traffic and suspend municipal buses.
