About the place

The museum anchors the national modern art collection inside a former general hospital complex expanded with contemporary steel and glass.

The institution occupies the former General Hospital of Madrid, commissioned by the crown and designed by architects José de Hermosilla and Francisco Sabatini. Subsequent renovations converted the neoclassical structure into an exhibition complex, punctuated by external glass circulation towers designed by Ian Ritchie. An addition by Jean Nouvel introduced auditoriums, administration space, and public terraces.
