About the place

Parque de la Montaña houses an ancient Nubian sanctuary that arrived piece by piece across the Mediterranean.

The monument originated south of Aswan as an ancient Nubian sanctuary. When dam construction threatened archaeological sites throughout the Nile valley, international cooperation mobilized to safeguard the region. Egypt presented the entire complex to Spain to honour assistance during the campaign to save Nubian monuments. The dismantled stones were shipped across the sea and rebuilt within Parque de la Montaña.

Very few examples of authentic Egyptian architecture exist outside their native territory, making this reconstructed sanctuary an unusual urban fixture. It stands as the sole monument of its type across Spain. Rebuilding the structure required transporting dismantled masonry across continents, converting an ancient Nile valley shrine into a public park landmark that anchors the western green space of Madrid.
