Residents rely on the subway line or the dense tram tracks to cross town, because heavy surface traffic gridlocks the avenues between Uralmash and the centre.

About the place

Heavy engineering and metallurgy shaped the urban core, which now functions as a sprawling commercial hub.

State ironworks along the Iset River established the original settlement as a metal manufacturing base. Under the Soviet name Sverdlovsk, defense factories dominated municipal production and employment. Subsequent economic reforms shifted the local market toward commercial logistics, trade, and financial services, making the metropolis a principal transit gateway between western territories and Siberia.

Commuters face chronic vehicular congestion across central corridors, where car ownership regularly outpaces street capacity. The municipal transit grid counters this gridlock with a dense tramway system and an underground subway line linking industrial quarters to the center. Passengers also use suburban electric trains and the central station, which accommodates long-distance Trans-Siberian rail traffic.

Cultural institutions anchor downtown life through established drama halls, an opera and ballet theatre, and extensive public scientific libraries. Local studios fostered prominent bands that defined the distinct regional Ural rock genre. Museum collections preserve metalworking crafts, including the cast-iron Kasli pavilion, alongside stone carving displays and prehistoric wooden archaeological relics unearthed from regional sites.

About New York (or the smelliest day of my life)

By the time I reached New York, a ton of time had passed and I hadn't encountered a single shower along the way. Everything went exactly as I calculated in Yekaterinburg before the trip started: a day to Moscow (cologne doesn't really help after the train), another day flying to New York (plus the time I spent sitting in Domodedovo), and another night spent at the airport in New York since I arrived late at night. And now morning has come, and I bought a bus ticket to Myrtle Beach for the evening. Basically, I can walk around all day, but there's one obstacle - my smelly, stinky fragrance. But this is America, this is New York (like, everything is supposed to smell like this here, but nope), I can't just sit around. Anyway, I didn't care, I went for a walk. People say New York stinks, I don't know, I didn't feel it. Or maybe I added to it myself. P.S. Nikitoz helped me calculate the number of days without a shower, he did it in a snap. It didn't scare me at all. But I remembered his laughter. P.P.S. In the evening, I locked myself in the station restroom. Not in a stall, IN THE RESTROOM. I washed as best I could - washed my armpits, brushed my teeth, changed my socks and underwear. And when people were banging on the door, I thought about the words from the American guidebook "Discover America", something like "Americans are all different, you can't say anything that unites them. Sometimes it seems they go beyond the limits of what is allowed." I think I'll go a little beyond them too =)

Stage three - Offer confirmation!

Phew!!)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) A huge weight off my shoulders=) A month of waiting, then the LM status, the employer called the sponsor in New York, everything was confirmed, and the status changed to OK=)))) Now it's time to wait for the DS-2019 and fill out the DS-160=) By the way, at the very beginning of the application, where it says "Select the location where you will be submitting your application," you need to select YEKATERINBURG!!! I didn't find it the first time because I assumed the name started with an "E" and chose Moscow instead. Interviews start in less than a month! So good luck to everyone=))) We will definitely make it!!!!! Not much left now=)) (20.03.2011)

Hi, my name is Vika and I'm from the city of Yekaterinburg! My blog won't be too long, nor will it be stuffed with epithets, metaphors, or descriptive turns of phrase (even though I'm a philologist by education). It's just a light story, and I'll focus on a few specific moments. If you, dear readers, like my blog but don't find the answer to your question, or if you want to expand on any topic, you can easily contact me (addresses at the end of the blog). So, I'm starting ^_^ I want to thank IEC for the opportunity to have a mass landing of students from all over the world in America. You are simply geniuses, and the person who invented, implemented, and perfected the Work and Travel USA program is a genius. I admire it, honestly. Not every adult can afford a trip to America. It's an expensive pleasure, and it's far away. And I don't think it's like a typical family vacation... it's easier, cheaper, and closer to go for a family vacation to Crimea (I love Crimea, I spent my whole childhood there) or Turkey. And here is such a chance! Thank you for this, I'm thrilled! =) My summer story began on June 5, 2014. Five pale and exhausted-from-finals future traveler-frogs met early in the morning at Koltsovo Airport in Yekaterinburg. We really looked tired and weren't particularly happy about the upcoming trip. I think we just didn't understand what was happening =) We stood modestly with our little suitcases, waiting to board the bird of happiness from the Aeroflot company. *I want to say thank you to the bird that safely delivered us to Moscow, to Sheremetyevo Airport* In Sheremetyevo, the traveler-frogs ran around looking for currency exchange points and for another dose of coffee for me—I'm just a wild coffee addict. And finally, we tucked our little bottoms into the main bird that took us straight there, to New York. Woohoo, no more sitting in a fetal position, wondering, "I wonder if I'm the only one who feels like a child in a tight stroller?", or suffering from a lack of sleep and annoying the flight attendants with requests to bring something to "chew on." Yes, that's how we ate away our boredom, because the movies just didn't work for us at all. And we really should have slept!!! I, a walking—and at that moment, sitting—miracle, made a mistake in the declaration (they give it to you on the plane, if I remember correctly, just before landing at the American airport). I put a checkmark in the wrong place... the question was written something like: "Are you bringing fruits or vegetables into America for further distribution?" YES! I am bringing a kilogram of cranberries for sale, well, you know, extra income! And a big African-American guy (actually, I love them very much and am not afraid of them at all), while checking the declaration, started to react nervously and comment on my checkmark, and I realized... and started waving my arms just as nervously, clearly keeping up with the pace of the dialogue he set, and saying that it was a mistake, I'm a student, Russia, I just messed up, sorry-excuse me uncle, but NO! The guy (the same sweet African-American guy) sent me to a separate counter with another dark-skinned guy... scenes from movies about American prisons or scams immediately came to mind... and I was in the lead role... and they were going to torture me... with a lamp, a chair, and ropes, well, everything as it should be, you understand. But I kept repeating like an oath: "it's a mistake, I'm a student, Russia, I just messed up, sorry-excuse me uncle" and they let me go. A good oath, remember it=)) *My girls, including me, hadn't yet managed to adapt to the sound of fast American speech, and we made the airport workers laugh)) It was funny)*

D-Day

The day of departure has finally arrived. It's going to be a long journey. Starting my trip from my hometown of Chelyabinsk, my mom, my brother, and I headed to Yekaterinburg to fly to Moscow. Arriving just in time, I headed to check-in, while my beloved family headed back 200 km. Flying to Moscow, I lived through the same hour all over again. Now I'm at Sheremetyevo, waiting 12 hours for my flight to London, and then to New York. I found a girl through the wonderful website iec.ru who I'll be spending the night with at the airport. So, I don't think it will be boring!

Consulate (continued...)

I can say just a few words about the consulate. I prepared for about a week using questions found online. I passed the consular interview easily, although out of 40 people, only 6 were granted a visa. I wasn't asked many questions. The only thing worth noting: if you are having your interview in Yekaterinburg, definitely mention animals to the older consul; he loves them. He asked me if I had any siblings, to which I replied no, but I have a cat and a dog who are like a younger brother and sister to me. After that, he pointed to a pamphlet, asked if I had read it, and started preparing my visa documents. If you get the younger one, then (I don't want to scare you), nothing but luck will help you. He is "stamping" denials!!! That's all! Getting ready for my flight to the USA!!! So happy!!!
