About the place

Peter the Great established Russia's earliest public museum to replace superstition with empirical observation.

Architect Georg Johann Mattarnovy designed the Petrine Baroque headquarters on the spit of Vasilievsky Island directly facing the Winter Palace. The complex originally integrated the imperial curio collection with working research institutions under the Academy of Sciences. An anatomical theatre occupied the central section beneath an astronomical observatory, while the western wing provided laboratory quarters for Mikhail Lomonosov.

Imperial ukases instructed provincial authorities to deliver anatomical anomalies to the capital so researchers could debunk superstitious monster myths. Peter expanded these holdings through purchases from Dutch anatomist Frederik Ruysch and collector Albertus Seba. Later institutional reforms separated the original repository into distinct zoological, mineralogical, and ethnographic branches that continue active scientific curation.
