About the place

A cable-stayed arena anchors the southern edge of Petrograd Side, hosting professional skating alongside mass public sessions.

Municipal authorities established the sports complex over a former municipal plant nursery and filled waterway between Penkovy Buyan and Petrograd Side. Engineers and architects earned the state prize for introducing an unsupported cable-stayed roof modeled on a bicycle wheel. Steel cables tensioned between concentric rings support the wide circular rotunda without internal pillars, keeping sightlines open across the ice.

Factory-assembled glazing and concrete pylons form the exterior cylinder, creating a structure that resembles a classical colonnade. Later renovations added bronze-tinted glass and an auxiliary practice rink for international tournaments. The expansion abandoned the original open landscape plan, leaving the surrounding island parcel dense and crowded with event annexes, training sheds, and heavy matchday pedestrian flows.
