About the place

Stroganov Palace preserves Bartolomeo Rastrelli's original Baroque design along Nevsky Prospect.

Baron Sergei Stroganov secured architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli for this townhouse while Rastrelli was completing Smolny Convent and the Catherine Palace for Empress Elisabeth. The Stroganov family held vast wealth and dynastic ties to the imperial throne, which accelerated the commission. Architect Andrei Voronikhin later remodeled the interiors in a Neoclassical manner, replacing earlier decor across the state halls.

Following nationalization, the state operated the property as a nobility lifestyle museum before shuttering the exhibition and moving key artworks to the Hermitage Museum. Botanical researchers and the Ministry of Shipbuilding subsequently occupied the rooms. The Russian Museum later acquired the site, carrying out thorough restorations that reinstated Rastrelli's original light pink exterior on the avenue.
