Tenants settling near the Olympic Stadium share their neighborhood with worshippers from across the capital, as the site concentrates metropolitan prayer traffic into a strictly limited selection of Islamic centers.
Architect Nikolay Zhukov designed the original building, which community members long referred to as the Tatar Mosque because ethnic Tatars formed the core of the local congregation. Situated near the Olympic Stadium in the central district, the site evolved into the primary congregational center for the entire metropolitan area. The facility remains among a strictly limited selection of Islamic houses of worship across the capital.
Controversy defined the modern site when officials stripped the structure of architectural heritage protections. An initial reconstruction plan by architect Ilyas Tazhiyev intended to disassemble and rebuild the walls to correct an alignment error toward Mecca. Religious authorities dismissed Tazhiyev, cited structural instability, and demolished the historic edifice, marking a rare destruction of a religious landmark in modern times.
