O miejscu

Barcelona Cathedral anchors the Gothic Quarter above centuries of excavated episcopal architecture.

The cathedral serves as the seat of the archbishop of Barcelona and stands over complex archaeological layers. Builders erected the main Gothic structure from east to west on earlier foundations, enclosing a cloister around the Well of the Geese. The ornate neo-Gothic front and soaring central tower replaced a plain Catalan exterior through private funding from the Girona family, who executed earlier historic architectural drawings.

Beneath the paving lies a deep sequence of older sanctuaries predating the medieval church. An early Visigothic episcopal quarter once occupied the ground, suffering severe destruction during an assault led by al-Mansur. Count Ramon Berenguer and Bishop Guislabert later supervised a Romanesque replacement over the crypt. Portions of the baptistery and ancient halls now sit in the city history museum underground.
