O miejscu

Nevsky Prospect functions as the primary east-west spine of the historic centre, channeling foot traffic, commerce, and municipal transport between terminal stations.

Peter the Great ordered the clearing through swampy woods to connect the Admiralty with the older overland trade route leading toward Novgorod and Moscow. Monks at Alexander Nevsky Lavra cut the eastern approach while municipal laborers cleared the western segment from the river fortress. Because separate construction teams worked independently toward each other, the avenue forms a visible kink at Vosstaniya Square.

Paving the original path required draining dense bogs around the modern Kazansky Cathedral and Mikhailovskaya Street using fascines and sand ditches. Artisans relocated from central provinces settled in clusters along the Griboyedov Canal and Sadovaya Street, while ship craftsmen built timber houses closer to the naval yards. Sentries strictly guarded royal gardens along the Fontanka to stop unauthorized timber cutting.

Long-term residents encounter a stark division between public street frontage and interior living quarters. Wooden bridges over the Moika and Fontanka evolved into stone crossings that carry non-stop bus, trolley, and metro traffic linking the Moscow Railway Station to the western embankment. Behind the continuous facades, deep courtyard networks isolate apartments from the exhaust and transit crowds.
