Tenants in Cannaregio navigate daily errands past quiet side canals while evening water taxis deliver crowds directly to the palace gates.
Architect Mauro Codussi designed the structure for Andrea Loredan, with Doge Leonardo Loredan financing the project before the Lombardo family finished the stonework. Classical columns frame the canal façade, where arched French doors and trefoil windows open directly above the water. Watercraft pull directly up to the lower gates from the Grand Canal, beneath an exterior stone carving carrying the Loredan family motto.
Subsequent noble dynasties altered the interior and grounds across generations. Vittore Calergi commissioned architect Vincenzo Scamozzi to build a wing overlooking a garden courtyard, while painter Mattia Bortoloni added frescoes across salon ceilings. The property eventually passed to the Vendramin lineage and later the Duchess of Berry before the Venetian municipality acquired the estate to establish a gaming house.
Long-term residents encounter the building as the winter seat of the municipal casino rather than an aristocratic residence. German composer Richard Wagner spent his final days inside the private apartments, and industrialist Giuseppe Volpi later converted the living quarters into an electrical research center. Cannaregio foot traffic around the water entrance surges nightly as visitors arrive by boat for gaming.
