Nice Cathedral stands as a baroque minor basilica dedicated to Saint Reparata at the base of the castle hill.

The cathedral occupies ground once used by the early church of St Mary of the Castle. Following the arrival of relics honoring Saint Reparata, a dedicated chapel arose at the base of the castle and later operated under the Abbey of Saint-Pons. As the urban parish expanded, church authorities moved the bishop's seat down from Cimiez Cathedral on the overlooking heights, establishing the site as the primary diocesan cathedral.

Architect Jean-André Guibert designed the current cathedral after Bishop Didier Palletis ordered an expansive structure suited to the growing commune. Builders consecrated the nave while finishing ongoing structural work, later adding the prominent adjacent bell tower. Modern interior modifications introduced side chapels that removed older heavy baroque ornamentation, and church leadership elevated the building to a minor basilica.
