Long-term residents walk past the former seat of monarchical power, where modern political transformations sit beside quiet palace courtyards.
Before becoming the royal residence, this site belonged to prime ministers and noble families. Prime Minister Ranodip Singh Kunwar expanded the grounds into a sprawling estate before his assassination in the south wing. Later rulers demolished the old structures and commissioned architect Jogbir Sthapit to erect a palace, shifting the monarch from Hanuman Dhoka Durbar. An earthquake prompted renovations with a new portico.
King Mahendra ordered a complete rebuild designed by American architect Benjamin Polk, blending modern scale with traditional Nepalese architectural elements. The complex later witnessed the royal massacre that took the lives of King Birendra and Queen Aishwarya. Following the revolution that abolished the monarchy, King Gyanendra vacated the property, allowing the government to transform the palace into a public museum.
