Prime Minister Ranodip Singh Kunwar expanded the grounds into a sprawling estate before his assassination in the south wing. Later rulers demolished the old structures and commissioned architect Jogbir Sthapit to erect a palace, shifting the monarch from Hanuman Dhoka Durbar. An earthquake prompted renovations with a new portico.
