Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden: kas ir apkārt, kā nokļūt un kad doties · 2026. g.

Cape Town botanists and long-stay researchers treat the eastern slopes of Table Mountain as an outdoor laboratory, trading urban noise for damp mountain footpaths under native canopy.

Botanical research defines the cultivated slopes below the eastern mountain crags.

Jan van Riebeeck planted a defensive boundary hedge of wild almond and brambles across these slopes, and surviving sections remain preserved as a Provincial Heritage Site. The grounds originally supplied harvested timber before changing into private estates. Colonel Bird built a residence with a natural spring bath, while the Cloete and Ecksteen families subsequently developed orchards, vineyards, and oak groves on the hillside.

Cecil Rhodes purchased the property, planted Camphor Avenue, and bequeathed the terrain to the public. Cambridge botanist Harold Pearson selected the neglected plot alongside Neville Stuart Pillans to establish a dedicated botanical garden. Working without pay, Pearson cleared invasive growth, sold acorns and firewood for funds, and planted cycads in The Dell before his death and burial on the grounds under an inscribed epitaph.

The estate takes its name from land manager J.F. Kirsten combined with the Dutch word for bush. Today the South African National Biodiversity Institute oversees the territory to protect indigenous biomes across the subcontinent. Institutional stewardship followed transitions from the Botanical Society of South Africa and the National Botanical Institute, maintaining scientific collections against the mountain backdrop.
