Royal Observatory, Cape of Good Hope: kas ir apkārt, kā nokļūt un kad doties · 2026. g.

Astronomers residing near the observatory grounds run daytime analyses rather than night sky observations, since city lights long ago shifted all faint-sky telescope sessions to the Karoo desert.

The historic campus anchors modern South African astronomy while preserving classical instruments.

The British Board of Longitude established the institution to record southern star positions through rigorous astrometry. Decades of photographic mapping and catalogue compilation culminated in international sky surveys and early measurements of stellar parallax. Today the main colonial building functions as the administrative headquarters of the South African Astronomical Observatory following an amalgamation with Johannesburg.

Urban expansion around Cape Town eventually created severe light pollution that blinded ground equipment to faint objects. Professional deep-sky observations moved inland to the arid Karoo semi-desert, leaving the historic telescopes largely retired from active research. The urban campus now operates educational outreach sessions while researchers remember the site for verifying the existence of the rings around Uranus.

Fakti
  • A royal decree established the observatory under the direction of the British Board of Longitude.
  • The main facility now serves as administrative headquarters for the South African Astronomical Observatory.
  • Astronomer David Gill pioneered photographic star mapping through work on the Cape Photographic Durchmusterung.
  • Observations of a stellar occultation from the site confirmed the existence of rings encircling Uranus.
