Commuters stepping off the Keio Inokashira Line encounter a quiet corner of Komaba where daily domestic craft takes precedence over fine art galleries.
Religious philosopher Yanagi Soetsu established the institution alongside master potter Hamada Shoji to celebrate the mingei movement. The founders focused on unpretentious domestic items made by unnamed artisans rather than high-value antiques or western fine art. Funding from businessman Magosaburo Ohara allowed construction beside Yanagi's private residence in Komaba.
Exhibition halls display historical Korean handicrafts from the Joseon period, carved Buddhist woodwork by Mokujiki, and regional textiles. Collections also incorporate functional pottery and ceramics by prominent ceramic artists Kawai Kanjiro and Tomimoto Kenkichi. Today the Japanese Folk Crafts Museum Foundation oversees these galleries near Komaba-Todaimae Station.
