About the place

The Japanese Folk Crafts Museum preserves the mingei philosophy by displaying everyday utilitarian wares made by anonymous craftspeople.

Religious philosopher Yanagi Soetsu established the institution alongside master potter Hamada Shoji to celebrate the mingei movement. The founders focused on unpretentious domestic items made by unnamed artisans rather than high-value antiques or western fine art. Funding from businessman Magosaburo Ohara allowed construction beside Yanagi's private residence in Komaba.
