Tenants living near the Royal Garden pace past Queen Anne's Summer Palace on morning detours, trading direct tram access for steep castle switchbacks and silent park gates.
Ferdinand I commissioned the Belvedere on the eastern border of the Royal Garden for Anne Jagiellonica. Italian master Paolo della Stella drew the designs, while Giovanni Spatio managed the initial stone masonry. Neither builder survived to see the finished arcades, and the queen died before completion. The structure stands as an example of Italian Renaissance design outside the peninsula, surrounded by formal gravel paths.
Rudolf II adapted the upper level into an astronomical observatory and used the halls to lodge visiting dignitaries. Swedish troops later seized the palace for military quarters, followed by an artillery laboratory that occupied the grounds until Count Chotek evicted the garrison. Architects Bernhard Grueber and Pietro Nobile restored the interior with a Classicist staircase and a dedicated picture gallery.
Architect Pavel Janák directed subsequent restoration work to establish modern gallery spaces inside the halls. The site holds status as a National Cultural Monument and hosts alternating exhibitions of fine and applied arts. Long-term residents use the surrounding promenades for quiet transit, though admission checkpoints and seasonal park gate closures prevent late night passage between castle hill and the tram line.
