Malá Strana residents use the open palace gardens to dodge tram crowds and street congestion, timing daily walks around parliamentary security and evening gate closures.
Albrecht von Wallenstein cleared dozens of private houses, gardens, and brickworks to construct an estate designed to rival Prague Castle. Italian masters Andrea Spezza and Niccolo Sebregondi directed the architectural work, producing courtyards, stables, and a monumental loggia. Florentine painter Baccio del Bianco decorated the interior halls, including the vast ceiling frescoes that still line the ceremonial rooms.
The complex now houses the Senate of the Czech Republic, functioning as an active legislative workspace rather than a quiet museum. Government staff occupy the historic wings, while the adjacent Riding School operates as an exhibition hall under the National Gallery. Living nearby brings regular security cordons and political traffic into the surrounding street network, restricting vehicular access during parliamentary sessions.
Formal Italian gardens extend behind the palace loggia, defined by an aviary, a grotto, and an expansive sala terrena modeled after church architecture. Netherlandish sculptor Adriaen de Vries created the bronze statues along the main paths, though Swedish soldiers carried off the originals during historical wartime raids. The current bronzes are precise replicas, set amid manicured hedges where local residents take respite.
