Residents living beside the palace trade quiet residential streets for constant foot traffic through the courtyards connecting to Museum Island.
The palace stands beside Berlin Cathedral at the edge of Museum Island in Mitte. It served as the principal seat for the Electors of Brandenburg, Prussian kings, and German emperors. The structure originated as a fortified stronghold erected to enforce princely control over townspeople who resisted relinquishing municipal autonomy.
Subsequent rulers reshaped the fortress into an Italian Renaissance palace and later into a monumental baroque residence. Master builder Andreas Schlüter designed the central courtyard layout, which successive architects retained even as western expansions enlarged the footprint. The interior once housed the Amber Room before the Prussian monarchy gifted the installation to the Russian court.
Religious patronage shaped the surrounding quarter when an early castle chapel dedicated to Erasmus received relics from a Jerusalem pilgrimage. That collegiate chapter eventually developed into the adjacent Berlin Cathedral. Later additions culminated in a high dome over the palace chapel, altering the district skyline that long-term residents now encounter along everyday transit routes through Mitte.
