Renters in the central districts quickly learn to orient daily life by the names of dismantled imperial gates.
The defensive enclosure originated under the Yuan dynasty as Dadu before Ming forces under General Xu Da captured the settlement. Xu Da judged the perimeter too expansive to defend during sieges, pulling the northern wall southward and adding thick brick layers. When the imperial seat moved from Nanjing to Beijing, builders shifted the southern perimeter outward to accommodate the palace grounds and state altars.
Later defensive programs introduced fortified gate towers, barbicans, corner guard towers, and protective moats across the perimeter. Most of the extensive masonry circuit was demolished during modern urban redevelopment, yet key historical fragments survive in the urban fabric. Long-term residents still encounter original moat sections, rammed earth ramparts, and the preserved barbican earthworks at Suqingmen.
