Rammed earth foundations and surviving corner towers preserve the outline of an imperial defense system that once enclosed the entire capital.

The defensive enclosure originated under the Yuan dynasty as Dadu before Ming forces under General Xu Da captured the settlement. Xu Da judged the perimeter too expansive to defend during sieges, pulling the northern wall southward and adding thick brick layers. When the imperial seat moved from Nanjing to Beijing, builders shifted the southern perimeter outward to accommodate the palace grounds and state altars.

Later defensive programs introduced fortified gate towers, barbicans, corner guard towers, and protective moats across the perimeter.
