About the place

Centuries of papal collecting established the Vatican Museums as an expansive complex of Renaissance masterpieces and classical antiquities.

The institution began when the papacy purchased the classical marble group of Laocoön after its discovery in a vineyard near Santa Maria Maggiore. Pope Julius sent Michelangelo and Giuliano da Sangallo to examine the marble before placing it on public view. Subsequent pontiffs expanded the institution through the Museum Christianum, the Lateran Museum, and excavated tombs beneath the Vatican Hill.

Behind the exhibition galleries lies an active administrative apparatus overseen by Director Barbara Jatta. Most catalogued items remain secured in storage archives rather than mounted in public rooms. Specialists and conservators maintain operations across distinct administrative, scholarly, and restoration departments, meaning resident researchers engage with a functioning working institution rather than a static monument.
