About the place

The Apostolic Palace contains the official papal residence and administrative headquarters of the Catholic Church.

Pope Symmachus initiated construction of an early papal residence near Old Saint Peter's Basilica as an alternative to the Lateran Palace. Later pontiffs expanded and modified the fortified compound. Following the papal return from Avignon, leadership stayed at Basilica di Santa Maria in Trastevere and Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore until the damaged medieval palace was razed to establish the current complex.

The building also bears the name Palace of Sixtus, honoring the pontiff who shaped its prevailing architecture alongside successors Urban, Innocent, and Clement. An apostolic prefecture managed the estate until economic pressures prompted Leo to transfer governance to an administrative committee. Today the compound contains papal apartments, Holy See government offices, historic chapels, the Vatican Library, and public museum galleries.
