A person settling near Roncesvalles trades quiet lakefront parkland for the heavy traffic of Lake Shore Boulevard, relying on the historic dance hall primarily as an occasional private event space rather than an open neighborhood ballroom.
The property originated as a canoe factory and boathouse supplying a local paddling club before converting entirely into an entertainment venue. The architectural firm Chapman, Oxley and Bishop designed the structure with boat craft in the basement and an expansive dance floor on the upper level. Touring big bands transformed the hall into a celebrated swing stop, where bandleaders Duke Ellington and Count Basie headlined major concerts.
Civil rights demonstrations desegregated the venue when picketers forced management to end racial exclusion on the dance floor. While expressway work demolished the surrounding amusement park, municipal authorities protected the building under heritage status. The hall now functions for private events and concerts, having replaced its old mini-golf greens with open shoreline lawns and willow trees.
