Residents living on the square wake to the clatter of market stalls assembling on cobblestones, trading midday foot traffic for deserted central streets once vendors pack away their goods.
The site began as an open ground for selling farm produce and company garden harvests, anchored by a communal fountain. Enslaved people were traded alongside agricultural provisions. Civic security operated from a burgher watch house that later became the Old Town House, which now houses the Michaelis Collection. Surrounding thatch dwellings gave way to multistory masonry facades, church spires, and modern commercial blocks.
Civic commerce drifted toward Grand Parade following the completion of a newer city hall. The paved space spent decades operating as a municipal parking lot before national monument status halted traffic. Anti-apartheid marches converged here during the Purple Rain demonstration. Craft traders eventually replaced vehicles, setting up daily souvenir stands across the square.
Retail around the perimeter long included the oldest tobacconist in the country, Sturks Tobacco, which shuttered following pandemic tobacco bans. Newspaper House served as the headquarters and active printing press for the Cape Argus and Cape Times. City authorities later cancelled master commercial market leases amid mounting debt and management disputes.
