About the place

Fritz Schumacher shaped the fortress grounds into an archive of northern urban life.

Fritz Schumacher built the main brick complex along Holstenwall on the footprint of Bastion Henricus, a baroque fortification originally laid out by Jan van Valckenborgh. The institution grew from the collection of the local history society, which preserved stonework from demolished medieval monasteries and St. Mary Cathedral. The inner courtyard features a steel gridshell glass roof designed by Von Gerkan, Marg and Partners.

Before this site hosted historical galleries, it served as the city observatory and earlier operated from the Johanneum school. Inside, exhibitions trace the Hanseatic port network, Elbe navigation defences, and regional trade. The museum gained international notoriety when thieves stole a preserved pirate skull pierced by an iron execution spike, long linked in local tradition to the privateer Klaus Stoertebeker.
