Fritz Schumacher built the main brick complex along Holstenwall on the footprint of Bastion Henricus, a baroque fortification originally laid out by Jan van Valckenborgh. The institution grew from the collection of the local history society, which preserved stonework from demolished medieval monasteries and St. Mary Cathedral.
