About the place

The Reeperbahn anchors the nightlife of St. Pauli as the central entertainment corridor and primary red-light district.

The name translates from Low German as a ropewalk, designating a manufacturing track for maritime cordage. Dense development in the old Neustadt quarter along the river forced rope makers to relocate their operations outside the defensive city walls onto the country road toward Altona. The wide layout of the manufacturing grounds formed the modern thoroughfare that became the center of public entertainment and trade.
