Upper East Side residents return to the continuous spiral ramp throughout the season to study rotating exhibitions alongside the permanent modern collection.
Solomon R. Guggenheim shifted his focus from old masters to European avant-garde painting after meeting artist Hilla von Rebay. The collector initially displayed abstract canvases by Wassily Kandinsky inside his apartment at the Plaza Hotel. Under Rebay, the foundation launched the Museum of Non-Objective Painting to showcase modernist works before securing the permanent Manhattan site on the Upper East Side.
Frank Lloyd Wright conceived the structure as an inverted ziggurat, using a continuous spiral ramp beneath a glass dome instead of separate floor levels. The commission marked the only museum project of his career, requiring a vertical layout suited to Manhattan rather than his typical rural plans. Because Wright lacked local architectural licensing, the project relied on Arthur Cort Holden to navigate city approvals.
The permanent holdings center on Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, early Modern, and contemporary art, paired with changing special exhibitions. Frank Lloyd Wright secured the commission after Irene Rothschild Guggenheim corrected Hilla von Rebay, who assumed the architect had died. The institution continues under the ownership of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, carrying the founder's name following his death.
