The commission marked the only museum project of his career, requiring a vertical layout suited to Manhattan rather than his typical rural plans. Because Wright lacked local architectural licensing, the project relied on Arthur Cort Holden to navigate city approvals.

The permanent holdings center on Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, early Modern, and contemporary art, paired with changing special exhibitions. Frank Lloyd Wright secured the commission after Irene Rothschild Guggenheim corrected Hilla von Rebay, who assumed the architect had died. The institution continues under the ownership of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, carrying the founder's name following his death.
