U.S. Route 66: ce qu’il y a autour, comment y aller et quand venir · 2026

Drivers navigate disjointed segments across multiple states, requiring careful route planning across former alignments rather than following a single unbroken highway.

Carte des lieux
À propos du lieu

U.S. Route 66 links historic highway networks between the Midwest and the Pacific coast.

The road originated by consolidating existing regional paths, auto trails, and military wagon corridors rather than creating new cross-country pavement. It formed an official connection from Chicago to coastal Southern California, functioning as a primary east-west transport link across the prairies and southwestern desert regions.

Federal planners designated the numbered highway to unify private auto trails under a coherent national designation. Civic leaders pushed promotional campaigns and long-distance footraces across the states to spur local business, turning the road corridor into a recognized fixture in American music, television, and migration history.

Modern travel requires navigating bypasses, decommissioned alignments, and discontinuous business loops. Interstate highways replaced the original throughway, shifting high-speed logistics away and leaving historic roadside communities dependent on preserved heritage sites, independent motoring stops, and seasonal road travelers.

  • The path originally combined several independent networks, including the National Old Trails Road and Ozark Trails.
  • John Steinbeck's novel The Grapes of Wrath featured the road as a major corridor for Dust Bowl migration.
