The park originated as a joint venture between Newhall Land and Farming Company and Sea World Inc. Construction took place across undeveloped land in Valencia, naming the venue after the adjacent peak in the Santa Clarita Valley. Six Flags later purchased the entire operation, expanding the grounds into a massive regional destination.

Riders encounter historic engineering milestones across the property. The park introduced the first modern full-circuit vertical loop on a steel roller coaster with the Great American Revolution.
