À propos du lieu

Horace Jones designed Tower Bridge to relieve road congestion while preserving river access to the historic Pool of London.

Parliament mandated a mechanical bascule design so tall sailing ships could reach docks in the Pool of London without obstruction. Horace Jones and John Wolfe Barry engineered stone towers linked by high walkways and suspension spans. The legislation required the styling to reflect the adjacent Tower of London fortress, while giving maritime traffic absolute priority over road movement.

The crossing remains funded and maintained by the City Bridge Foundation, an independent ancient charity rather than municipal taxpayers. Long-term residents discover that statutory provisions still grant the military commander of the Tower of London the right to occupy the structure. Bascule openings occur regularly throughout the week, meaning pedestrian and bus commutes halt whenever vessels signal their approach.
