Residents treat the cavernous Turbine Hall as an indoor commons during damp weather. Incoming tourists crowd the gallery concourses by midday, leaving early mornings as the practical window for quiet work.
Sir Giles Gilbert Scott designed the original industrial complex in the Bankside district opposite St Paul's Cathedral. Following the end of electricity generation, public campaigns prevented commercial demolition after heritage listing was refused. Architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron directed the gallery conversion, retaining the central steel-framed turbine hall and its overhead crane.
The converted structure divided functions between art galleries inside the northern Boiler House and an active electrical substation retained by EDF Energy in the southern Switch House. An upper glass roof extension expanded exhibition space while underground oil storage tanks became dedicated performance art areas. The institution functions within the national Tate network alongside Tate Britain, Tate Liverpool, and Tate St Ives.
