Bankside crowds push you off the public path during playhouse afternoons, so longer stays demand cutting south through the back alleys away from the Southwark crush.
The Globe Theatre was erected along the Southwark waterfront by the Lord Chamberlain's Men. Builders recycled structural timber from an earlier Shoreditch playhouse after a land lease dispute, ferrying the beams across the Thames. The low riverside plot required elevated earthworks and timber reinforcements to prevent flooding during high tides. William Shakespeare and fellow resident actors held direct ownership shares in the venture.
Performances featured dramatic premieres by Shakespeare, Ben Jonson, Thomas Dekker, and John Fletcher. A theatrical cannon ignited the original thatched roof during a production, destroying the structure. The company rebuilt the venue with a tile roof before wartime parliamentary decrees forced all London playhouses to shut. Workers eventually demolished the building for tenements, leading to a modern reconstruction near the site.
