À propos du lieu

The fortified complex forms the historical core of state authority, surrounded by massive defensive masonry and ceremonial open ground.

The citadel stands on Borovitsky Hill where the Neglinnaya joined the Moskva, bordered by Alexander Garden and the open paving of Red Square. Italian Renaissance architects Pietro Antonio Solari and Marco Ruffo designed the perimeter fortifications, Spasskie gates, and the Palace of Facets. Today the protected compound combines presidential executive offices with historic cathedrals, retaining continuous defensive ramparts.

Long-term residents quickly discover that the district functions primarily as an active seat of sovereign power rather than a conventional public park. Ancient decrees prohibited commercial structures against the walls, creating an enforced perimeter that separated the fortress from the merchant quarters of Kitay-gorod. Daily life nearby requires adapting to cordoned plazas, motorcade closures, and strict federal protection.

Beneath the visible red brickwork lies an older history of transformation, where limestone fortresses replaced earlier timber palisades before Italian brick masonry took hold. Andrei Rublev and Theophanes the Greek contributed masterworks to the Cathedral of the Annunciation, while Saint Basil's rose across the eastern moat. The citadel endured occupations, uprisings, and periods of imperial abandonment without losing its central gravity.
