À propos du lieu

Russia's oldest independent theatrical academy trains actors, directors, and choreographers in central Moscow.

The institute began as a private music school under the Philharmonic Society before expanding into acting and direction under Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko and Alexander Yuzhin. Early classes produced graduates such as Vsevolod Meyerhold and Olga Knipper. The academy later merged with Meyerhold theatrical workshops to establish GITIS as an independent drama conservatoire.

Teaching expanded to include choreography alongside acting, directing, and stage production management within the historic Soldatenkov estate. Leading practitioners including Serafima Birman and Yury Zavadsky trained generations of performers here. During wartime disruption, the school evacuated to Saratov, where faculty and graduates formed an active front theatre ensemble.
